Bulldogs top ’Jackets in district play

Eustace moves to 2-1 with home win over Kemp

EUSTACE–The Eustace Bulldogs picked up a big district win over the Kemp Yellowjackets Jan. 14 at home.
The Bulldogs put points up early as JR Patek knocked down a three-pointer to give Eustace an early 3-0 lead.
Kemp responded with a basket from Clayton Brown to make it 3-2. The ’Jackets took their first lead of the night on a basket from Klay Karl as they went ahead 6-4.
A steal and layup from Patek tied the game 6-6, leading to a Kemp timeout.
Kemp and Eustace traded baskets late as they sat tied 8-8 after the first quarter.
Gabriel Ocanas hit a three-pointer at the start of the second quarter as he broke the 10-10 tie to put the Bulldogs ahead 13-10.
The Bulldogs got multiple shots from Cooper Reeve to increase their lead to 20-14 over Kemp.
Two free throws from Brown trimmed the Eustace lead to 20-16 late in the second quarter.
Cade Adair added the final two points of the half for the Bulldogs as they led 22-16 over Kemp at halftime.
An offensive rebound from Adair and a three-pointer from Patek began the second half as the Bulldogs pushed their lead to 27-16 early in the third quarter.
Another steal and layup from Patek increased the Eustace lead to 29-16, forcing a Kemp timeout just 1:47 into the third quarter.
Kemp got a surge of energy out of the timeout as Hayden Stevenson added a basket along with two free throws from Karl to make it a 31-20 game.
Ocanas hit two out of three from the free throw line after he was fouled on a three-point attempt to make it a 37-24 game in favor of the Bulldogs heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs held the ’Jackets to seven points in the fourth quarter as they rattled off 17 points to take home a district victory over Kemp, 54-31.
Kemp was led by Karl, who notched 14 points in the loss to the Bulldogs. Elijah Dubois and Stevenson each added six points for the ’Jackets.
Reeve led the way for Eustace with 17 points in the win over Kemp.
Ocanas and Patek added double-digit efforts as well with 13 and 10 points respectively.
The loss drops Kemp to 0-10 overall and 0-3 to begin district play. Kemp returns to action Jan. 21 on the road against the Palmer Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m.
The win moves Eustace to 9-10 overall and 2-1 to begin their district schedule. Eustace hits the road Jan. 21 against the Mildred Eagles with tipoff set for 5 p.m.
