KERENS–A second-half Centerville surge spoiled Senior Night for Kerens, which saw a 14-7 halftime disadvantage turn into a 42-7 loss.
The Bobcats then traveled to Normangee for the Nov. 8 regular-season finale. Kerens and Cayuga entered Nov. 8 tied at 1-3 in the win-loss column for fourth place in District 9-2A, with the top four teams heading to postseason.
One scenario for Kerens to qualify for the playoffs was a win over 3-1 Normangee, along with a Cayuga loss that night to winless Cross Roads. Cayuga holds the tiebreaker over Kerens because of their Oct. 25 head-to-head win.
Nov. 1, Centerville started scoring after blocking a punt, with the first play thereafter resulting in a 12-yard touchdown run. Kerens responded on the next drive when Josh Brown picked up a third-down fumble and ran three yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 7 with 4:30 left in the first quarter.
Centerville took the lead on a touchdown pass with 2:47 left before halftime. In the second half, Centerville scored a touchdown on its first possession and with 5:15 left in the third quarter to take command at 28-7.
Centerville continued their touchdown scoring with fourth-quarter drives of 99 and 43 yards to seize the 42-7 victory.
