Clothesline Project brings awareness

ATHENS–The HELP Center Director Leslie Sanders briefly spoke at the Clothes Line Project at the Henderson County Courthouse steps April 2.
Sanders stressed that one in every four girls and one in every six boys are victims of sexual assault by the age of 18. But only one in 10 will tell. The average age is eight. She also thanked everyone for showing up and supporting the cause. “We are here to support the smallest victims and give them the voice to become victorious over their victimization,” Saunders said.
Della Cooper, Director of Outreach for the  East Texas Crisis Center, said there were more than 300,000 victims in Texas in 2018. “In Henderscon County, we have assisted victims with counseling, legal advocacy and victim advocacy,” Cooper said.
Henderson County Judge Wade McKinney read two proclamations declaring April 2019 as Sexual Assualt Awareness Month and Child Abuse  Awareness and Prevention Month.
“It does a heart good, when dealing with this type of situation, to have the support that we do here at Henderson County.  Support is the key to any endeavor,” McKinney said.
