Cross Roads girls beat nemesis neighbor Cayuga

CROSS ROADS–The Cross Roads Lady Bobcats defeated the Cayuga Lady Wildcats Feb. 1 to force a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 19-2A.
After Cross Roads’ 44-32 win over Cayuga, both teams were tied at 3-5 in district with two games remaining. If tied afterward, the teams will hold a play-in game to determine the fourth playoff spot.
Before the game, Senior Night marked the final home game of Anna Cook, Brooke Lawrence and Kamryn Baker. Cross Roads led 9-4 when Brook Locke hit a three-pointer. Later, Alyssa Throneberry drove the lane for a bucket to put Cross Roads ahead 12-4.
Leading 12-6 entering the second period, Baker started Cross Roads’ scoring but Cayuga inched within 14-10. Locke nailed another three-pointer to move Cross Roads ahead 17-10, then the Lady Bobcats outscored Cayuga 4-3 the rest of the first half to lead at halftime, 21-13.
During the third period, Cook dropped in a finger-roll basket and Lawrence launched a three-pointer off the glass to give Cross Roads a 26-15 lead. After a Cayuga timeout, Alexis Sudduth found Throneberry underneath for a bucket, which increased the Cross Roads lead to 28-16 with 3:40 left in the third period.
Cayuga scored the final four points of the third period to close the gap to 28-20. Cross Roads then outscored Cayuga 16-12 in the fourth period to secure the win. Locke led Cross Roads with 17 points, followed by Lawrence with seven points, Sudduth with five points, Baker, Throneberry and Cook with four points apiece and Alanah Logan adding three points.
