Daniel Dale Smith was born Nov. 16, 1956, in Gregory, S.D., the youngest child of Allen Eddie Smith and Dell Orpha (Hull) Smith. He joined brothers and sister Gerald, Thomas, James and Kathleen.
From an early age Daniel had an interest in animals and birds and raised many. His kindergarten teacher Mrs. Jeannetta Ritter, gave him his first puppy. He raised ducks, geese, guineas, pigeons, peacocks, turkeys and all kinds of exotic chickens. He hatched guineas and sold them at three days old for a dollar each.
Daniel graduated from Gregory High School in 1975 and went on to college at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He graduated in 1979 with a BS in Biology and a minor in Physical Science.
Dan taught in Highmore and Alexandria before moving to Texas to teacher. He taught Chemistry, Biology and Advanced Placement science classes at the Mabank Independent School District for 32 years.
During his college years and the years he taught in South Dakota, Dan would come home to Gregory for the summer to help with haying. His job was mowing and raking.
Dan also enjoyed going to dances at Carlock during his summer break.
After moving to Texas, Dan started raising schnauzers. In 2007, Dan was tired of living in an apartment and he purchased a house in Seagoville. He enjoyed taking care of his house and yard and continued raising his dogs.
In the last several years, Daniel has struggled with some health issues. In 2011, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. In 2018, he battled a lung infection during the summer and into the fall. He suffered a stroke just as school was starting in 2019 and after rehab he was back at school. Daniel loved teaching and hated to miss work.
Once again Dan became ill this spring but wanted to get his students through the covid shutdown before going to the doctor. He was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away June 7, 2020 at Baylor University Hospital at the age of 63 years.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, sister Kathleen and her husband Larry Meirose  and nephew E.J. Smith.
