Dennis John Bray

Funeral services for Dennis John Bray were held May 7, 2018 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Gun Barrel City with Father O’Dowd officiating. Graveside services were held at Athens City Cemetery in Athens. Dennis was born Nov. 2, 1939 in Minneapolis, Minn., to parents John and Beatrice (Bauman) Bray and entered into eternal rest May 2, 2018 at the age of 78. He was known as “Denny” to his family and friends. Denny graduated from Heelan High School in Sioux, Iowa and from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., with a degree in math. He married the love of his life, Joann, June 16, 1962 in Des Moines, Iowa. Denny worked for Continental Western Life Insurance for more than 30 years, moving his way up from I.T. to Senior VP. He enjoyed staying busy, always needing a project to work on. Denny loved working on cars, riding his motorcycle and loved being Dennis John Bray on the lake sail boating. He was a great handyman, volunteered as a tax-preparer for AARP and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Dennis was an extremely friendly man who was loved by many. He was amazing husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. Denny will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and son Christopher Bray. He is survived by his loving wife Joann Bray of Gun Barrel City, daughter Cathy Meyer and husband Dan of Fort Myers, Fla., daughter Julie Beck and husband Doug of College Station, granddaughter Jennifer Zapata and husband Jose of Montgomery, Ala., granddaughter Emily Meyer of Washington, D.C., granddaughter Lauren Beck of College Station, grandson Ryan Beck of College Station, great-grandchild William Zapata of Montgomery, Ala., sister Joan Bray of Jacksonville, Fla., brother Michael Bray and wife Rose of Sommers, N.Y., other loving family members and many more friends.
