Early voting begins April 22 for May 4 Election

HENDERSON COUNTY–Several cities and ISDs are holding elections for council seats, mayors and school board trustees. Early voting begins April 22 and runs through April 30.
The City of Athens has Mayor Monte Montgomery running unopposed. Place 1 Councilwoman Toni Clay faces opponent Chetan Patel for her seat. Also, for city voters, there is an unmandated referendum on the ballot to give them a voice in the Cain Center funding issue. PROPOSITON A reads: “SHALL the City Council of the City of Athens, Texas, expend a portion of the funds received from the sale of the City’s Combination Tax and Revenue Certificates of Obligation, Series 2017, for improvements to the Cain Center, estimated to be no more than $5,300,000?”
Gun Barrel City
Three council seats are in contention in Gun Barrel City. Place 1 incumbent Rob Rea faces challenger Richard Yaws, Place 2 incumbent Keith Butler faces Greg Aiello and for Place 5, incumbent Linda Rankin faces Joshua Smith.
Log Cabin
The City of Log Cabin Mayor Nancy Ruckstaetter runs unopposed. There are two 1-year council seats with Jessica Abbe and John Perkins running unopposed and two 2-year terms with David Campos, Teena Linder and Jennifer Williams contending for those seats.
Seven Points
The City of Seven Points has three council seats available. Contenders for those seats are Andy Perdue, Mark Hawson, Gerald Taylor and Kenneth Mc Connell. Tommy Taylor will be on the ballot but unfortunately Mr. Taylor has recently passed away.
Star Harbor
The City of Star Harbor has three council seats up for election. Incumbents Ray Batten, Marion Morrison and Jackie Robinson face challengers Mike Burns, Walt Cunningham and Don Condley.
Athens ISD
Athens ISD has two contenders for Place 5, Eric Smith and Margaret Richardson, two contenders for Place 6 Kari Wilmeth and Chris House,  Freddy Paul runs unopposed for Place 7.
Eustace ISD
Eustace ISD has 11 candidates for three seats on the Board of Trustees. Place 3 Jamie Potter, Diane Shaffer, Blake Ward, Leslie Smith, and Michael Cates.  Place 4 Jack Kile, Katie Goodell McCallister, and Steven Bell.  Place 7 Bobby Karl Ashton, Karyn Mullen, and Larry Tiner.
Mabank ISD
Place 1 held by Dr. Darrell Kinnard and Place 2 Jeremy Zmolik are unopposed. Place 3 Steven Schiff faces Denise Mitchell.
