KAUFMAN COUNTY–Two Mabank women tragically lost their lives Monday afternoon in a house fire north of Mabank.
According to a press release from Kaufman County Fire Marshal Randy Richards, a 9-1-1 call was received Monday, Sept. 23 by a caller identified as Tina Mercer, 41, of Mabank. She reported the house was on fire and people were inside including an infant and the caller’s mother, who was disabled.
Mercer told the dispatcher she had safely removed the infant from the residence and was going back in to help her mother.
First responders arrived to find the infant safe outside, but Mercer and her mother, Linda Scott, 65, were found inside the home, apparently overcome by smoke and deceased.
Kaufman County Fire Marshal’s Office, Mabank Fire Dept. and Kaufman Fire Dept. responded to the scene, as did Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, Mabank Police Department, Mabank ISD Police and the Kaufman County Pct. 4 Constable’s Office.
The infant child was uninjured and safe. The house is a total loss.
The State Fire Marshal is working in conjuction with the Kaufman County Fire Marshal to determine the cause of the fire, which is currently under investigation.
Mercer, who was employed by Brookshire’s in Mabank, leaves behind four children currently in school at Mabank ISD.
The Mabank ISD Athletic Boosters put the following message on their Facebook page:
Mabank ISD Community,
Yesterday a family with four children in school suffered a tragic loss when their home caught fire.
We are working with several organizations to assist the family. There will be a great need as they prepare funeral expenses and try to recover.
If you would like to donate monetarily, an account has been set up at Southside Bank in GBC. The address is 901 W. Main St. GBC and phone number (903) 887-8722. The account is set up under the Mercer Family Tragedy Account.
A  Drive Through Plate Dinner supporting the Mercer family will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26 at MHS. The plates will be $8 and all funds and donations will go directly to the family.
It will run from 4:30-7 p.m. Drive through pick-up will be located on the west side of the high school by the athletic pull through drive.
If you would like to donate food/meals, we recommend gift cards because it is uncertain as to their location at meal time, much more flexible for the family.
