First-place Kerens softball wins big over LaPoynor

KERENS–The Kerens Lady ‘Cats softball team continued their district dominance with a 17-2 victory over LaPoynor during a Good Friday home game April 2.
LaPoynor scored the first run against the Lady ‘Cats, who are undefeated at 6-0 in district play. In the bottom of the first inning, a passed ball allowed McKenzie Bancroft to tie the game. Madison Brumit later doubled in Leah Greene and Claudia Garcia to put Kerens ahead 3-1.
The Lady ‘Cats scored four runs in the first inning and nine runs in the second inning to take a 13-2 lead into the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Raygan Brooks walked in Aniya Lawrence for the winning run, allowing Kerens to run-rule LaPoynor. Starting pitcher Kenadee Lynch picked up the victory.
The Kerens softball team previously beat LaPoynor March 30 in away game action, 23-2 (scoring 15 runs in the first inning), and defeated Cayuga twice, 17-2  March 16 and 21-13 March 19.
The Kerens Bobcat baseball team also hosted LaPoynor April 2, losing 12-4 to the unbeaten district-leading Flyers (6-0). Kerens 92-4 in district) took a 3-1 lead on a Cody Crawford double, which drove in two runs. With the game tied at 3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Patrick Crabtree drove in Ryan Priddy, who reached base on a hit-by-pitch and then stole second.
After Kerens had retaken a 4-3 lead, LaPoynor exploded in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. For Kerens, Danny Conklin and Priddy saw action on the mound. Lane Lynch joined Crawford and Crabtree in the RBI category, driving in one run.
March 30, LaPoynor baseball also beat Kerens, 9-2. Before that, Kerens beat Trinidad twice, winning 19-0 and 15-0 March 23 and 26, respectively.
