EUSTACE–Eustace senior Miranda Fontenot signed her intent to throw the discus and hammer at the collegiate level with Stephen F. Austin State University May 23 at Eustace High School.
Fontenot took home the Regional championship in Waco to advance to the State competition in Austin in early May. She also set the new Regional and Eustace school record with a discus throw of 131’ 10” at the Regional competition before finishing in fifth place at State.
Fontenot reflected on her time at Eustace and how special it has been for her.
“It’s amazing,” Fontenot said. “My coach is probably the best thing that happened this year,” she said with a smile. “It’s pretty special. I’m glad I got to be at Eustace and be a part of it.”
After a successful regular season meet schedule this year, Fontenot says there were areas of focus that helped her reach her full potential and compete at the highest level in 2019.
“I think really focusing on my steps and having a new coach come in and see some things that I couldn’t see before. I think my coach helped me a lot, plus everybody that threw with me, we all helped each other and coached each other.”
Fontenot said she  never really thought of throwing at the collegiate level, but her senior year and the accomplishments she made down the stretch really opened her eyes to competing past high school.
“It’s amazing, I didn’t think about this. I’m ready to take it to the next level and experience something bigger.”
She also spoke about the impact it has on her and her family to make it to college and compete athletically at a Division I school like Stephen F. Austin.
“It’s a pretty big deal. I’m only the second person in my family to go to college, also being an athlete on top of that, it is just really special.”
