GBC spa and salon owner seeks kidney donor

Article Image Alt Text

GUN BARREL CITY–After 15 years of helping lake-area residents keep up with their beauty needs, Ann Riley of Sylvester Spa and Salon now needs your help.
Riley, the Gun Barrel City spa and salon’s owner and operator, has failing kidneys and has been on dialysis for about four years. Until recently, that has meant going to Corsicana three times a week for four-hour dialysis sessions, which she now does at home.
Riley currently seeks a living kidney donor. A living donation maximizes the chance for a recipient to receive a transplant before the recipient’s condition worsens. “I’d like to get help as I get older,” Riley says.
Riley’s health problems haven’t kept her from a successful business, with eight other women working with her. “I just do,” she says. “You have to get up every day and not feel sorry for yourself. Otherwise, you’d just be bedridden.”
To see whether you match up with Riley to be a living kidney donor, visit and click “Living Kidney Donor.” There, you’ll find a confidential health history questionnaire that will take 15-20 minutes to fill out. No information will be shared with the recipient or others.
You’ll need some information about Riley to continue. Her full name is “Cherryann Riley,” with a blood type of O+.
That last part is important, because living kidney donors need a compatible blood type. Also, you must first meet other basic criteria, including being a healthy individual between the ages of 18 and 65, with two normal kidneys (donors older than 65 are considered on a case-by-case basis).
A coordinator will match potential donors and schedule blood tests and tissue typing. All will be paid by Riley’s insurance, she says, with no out-of-pocket expenses. You can also call (214) 820-GIFT (4438).
Since moving to Cedar Creek Lake in 1993, Riley’s business – and her husband, Herbert – have provided needed inspiration. “You just have to have a driving force to provide it,” she says. “And I enjoy my work and that makes a difference, too.”
To reach Riley at her spa and salon, located at 229 E. Main, call (903) 887-4700.
