GUN BARREL CITY– Gun Barrel City kicked off their 50th anniversary festivities with an open house at City Hall Saturday, May 18. Many were in attendance including Mayor David Skains, City Councilwoman Anne Mullins and two of its newest council members Richard Yaws and Gregory Aiello.
Guests at the open house were greeted by City Secretary Janet Dillard, her daughter Paige and Associate Judge Grace Wallace who were giving out punch and cake. They were then treated to a 50th Anniversary fact sheet with factoids about the city and a 50th Anniversary coin. In another section of City Hall there was a display of past and present Mayors pictures and an assortment of awards, certificates and other things that were special to the city. Guests could also visit the first fire truck that was on display in the parking lot which was purchased in 1973.
Special honors were given to Jim Malone for his contribution to the city for his slogan “We Shoot Straight With You.” Malone was working for the fire department in 1975 when the call went out for a new slogan for the city. Out of all that were entered, his was the one that was chosen to represent Gun Barrel City, an act that earned him $50 at the time and to him receiving a key to the city this many years later.
Showing their support for the city was the Gun Barrel City Beautification Committee who were selling Gun Barrel City T-shirts and radio station 106.9 The Ranch who held a drawing for tickets to this years JulyFest.
