Athens tops Rusk with strong second half, moves to 2-0
ATHENS–The Athens Hornets finished off the Rusk Eagles with a strong second half surge Sept. 6 at Bruce Field in Athens.
The Hornets fell behind just four minutes into the first quarter on an early Rusk rushing touchdown. The Eagles added a two-point conversion to go up 8-0 early.
The Hornets responded with a 20-yard rushing touchdown with about three minutes remaining in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 8-7.
Athens took the lead early in the second quarter on an 18-yard rushing touchdown with nine minutes remaining in the first half as the Hornets took a 14-8 lead into halftime.
A holding call in the first minute of the third quarter cost the Hornets a 74-yard touchdown to begin the second half.
The Hornets made up for the penalty five minutes later with a 23-yard rushing touchdown to increase their lead over the Eagles to 21-8.
The Eagles made it a one-score game with a short rushing touchdown with six minutes remaining in the third quarter after adding a two-point conversion, the Hornets’ lead was trimmed to 21-16.
The Hornets put the pin in any comeback hopes for the Eagles with a touchdown pass five minutes into the fourth quarter to put the game away as Athens took down Rusk 27-16.
The win over Rusk moves Athens to 2-0 to start the season under first-year Head Coach Zac Harrell.
Athens hits the road for their next contest as they take on the Fairfield Eagles (2-0) Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
