Athens tops Bullard with late score in fourth quarter
ATHENS–The Athens Hornets wrapped up their pre-district schedule as they scratched out a win over the Bullard Panthers Sept. 27 at home.
The Hornets opened the scoring on a 46-yard touchdown reception from Cam McDonald on fourth down to put Athens ahead 7-0.
The Panthers answered with an 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to make it a 7-6 game after an unsuccessful two-point conversion.
After a turnover on downs by Athens, Bullard cashed in on a 47-yard rushing touchdown to begin the second quarter to push the Panthers ahead of the Hornets 13-7.
The Panthers added a five-yard touchdown with 6:20 remaining in the first half to increase their lead to 20-7 over the Hornets.
Just two plays after the Panthers kickoff, Chase Frederich ran the ball into the endzone from 28 yards out to cut the deficit to 20-14 for the Hornets.
A 26-yard touchdown reception allowed the Panthers to double up their lead over Athens as they sat ahead 28-14.
Jerquindon Taylor and Nathan Sims added back-to-back touchdowns for the Hornets as they made it a one-point game as Athens trailed 28-27.
The Panthers answered with a five-yard touchdown run to increase their lead to 35-27 over the Hornets.
The Hornets would not quit as Sims added an 11-yard touchdown, his second of the night, to tie the game 35-35 with 6:41 remaining in the third quarter.
On 4th-and-7 from the 23-yard line, Frederich hit Sims with a touchdown pass to give the Hornets their first lead since the beginning of the game as they jumped in front of the Panthers 42-35.
The Athens’ defense came with a big stop as the Panthers turned the ball over on downs late in the fourth quarter as the Hornets ran the clock out for a big 42-35 victory in their final pre-district tune-up.
The win moves the Hornets to 4-1 overall on the season entering their Oct. 4 bye week. Athens opens up district play on their return to the field Friday, Oct. 11 on the road against the Life Waxahachie Mustangs (4-1) at 7:30 p.m.
