Hornets top Bulldogs after strong fourth

ATHENS–The Athens Hornets topped the Eustace Bulldogs in their Tuesday night home contest Dec. 10.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the first quarter before a 4-2 run by the Hornets made it a 7-6 Eustace lead.
Eustace finished the quarter on a 6-4 run to take a slim 13-10 lead heading into the second quarter.
An early three-pointer from Landry Nelson cut the deficit for Athens to 15-13.
The Hornets would continue their offensive push as they rattled off six unanswered points to take a 19-15 lead.
After adding four more points to their impressive run, Eustace was forced to take a timeout with 2:57 remaining in the first half as they trailed the Hornets 23-15.
The Bulldogs responded to the timeout as they pushed back against the Hornets, ending the first half on an 11-4 run to make it a 27-26 Athens lead at halftime.
A 5-2 run, capped by a layup from Cooper Reeve, gave the Bulldogs the lead back early in the third quarter as they moved in front of the Hornets 31-29.
The two teams battled back and forth the remainder of the third quarter, with Athens taking the slight edge in offense as they took a 35-33 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Nelson started the fourth quarter with another three-point shot to increase the Athens’ lead to 38-33.
A 15-10 run to end the game sealed the fate of the Bulldogs as the Hornets took home the win 53-43.
The Bulldogs were led in points by Reeve, who racked up 13 points in the loss to the Hornets.
Paxton Schwartz added 12 points, Cade Adair managed seven points and Mark Patek added six points Tuesday night.
The Hornets were led by senior Rowdy Godwin, who put up 17 points in the win over the Bulldogs.
Nelson notched nine points, Derek Killingsworth added eight points and Connor Woodard had seven points against Eustace.
The loss drops Eustace to 3-5 on the season. The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, Dec. 17 at home against Ferris with tipoff set for 5 p.m.
The win moves Athens to 2-5 early in the season. The Hornets hit the court Tuesday, Dec. 17 on the road as they take on Henderson at 7:30 p.m.
