CEDAR CREEK LAKE–Kaufman County issued a shelter in place order March 24, as did Gun Barrel City and Tool the same day. With the cases of COVID-19 climbing daily, our readers are concerned about what they can and cannot do during a Shelter in Place or Stay at Home order.
Shelter in Place is intended to reinforce the social distancing that is required to slow the spread of COVID-19, which spreads easily from person to person in close contact, within six feet of each other or by touching contaminated surfaces and touching the face.
Shelter in place orders restrict people to their residences except for performing essential activities, performing essential governmental functions or operating essential businesses. Public or private gatherings of 10 or more are also prohibited, except in the case of family members in a particular household. So, basically, unless you have to go out, stay home.
Essential Activities include:
Activities essential to health and safety of themselves or family members, such as visits to health care professionals, getting medical supplies or prescriptions or items needed to work at home.
Obtaining services or supplies needed to operate household and maintain health and safety, such as food shopping and cleaning supplies.
Engage in outdoor activity as long as social distancing is followed, such as biking, walking,  hiking, fishing or golf.
Perform work at an essential business.
Care for a family member in another household, including pets.
Essential businesses include:
Healthcare Facilities such as hospitals, doctor and dentist offices, pharmacies and blood banks, veterinary care clinics. These facilities may have restrictions on entry and elective dental and medical procedures are postponed.
Government Functions that relate to the health and safety of the public are still ongoing but public access to buildings is restricted.
Critical infrastructure such as public works construction, residential and commercial construction, electrical, water and sewer, financial institutions and internet services.
Essential retail includes grocery and big box stores, gas stations, convenience stores, laundry services and hardware stores. Large stores may restrict how many patrons enter their buildings to accommodate social distancing.
News media including newspapers, television and radio.
Childcare facilities to allow essential workers to go to work.
Currently, Kaufman, Navarro and Smith Counties have Shelter in Place orders as do the cities of Mabank, Gun Barrel City, Seven Points, Tool and Kerens.
The information above is a brief synopsis taken from locally published orders. More specific information is available on the websites for your city of residence or county of residence.
