Joe Shelby Spillman, III went to meet his maker Nov. 20, 2019. He died peacefully, in his sleep, at Christus Mother Frances in Tyler after a brief battle with a voracious lymphoma. Shelby was born May 3, 1948.
Shelby was born, lived, and died in Texas. He loved to drive his old truck up to Brookshires grocery and visit with the people there. He and his wife of five years, Jean, purchased a home on a couple of acres out near Phalba four years ago.
Shelby was a Christian, coming to know Jesus in 2012 at a cowboy church. Shelby volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1966, and served two tours in Vietnam. He was honored with two Purple Hearts. He served the public as a police officer for several years in Plano. He retired near Phalba on a few acres, living the past four years doing what he loved.
He is survived by his wife and several grown children, most notably daughter Jaimie Shoenfeld of Las Vegas, son Cory Spillman and wife Whitney of Texas and daughter Sarah Spillman of Tarrant County. He was able to meet three of his grandchildren before he passed. His furbabies, Sweetie Pie and Harley, are still watching the driveway for Pops to come home.
