Kemp tops Keene, wins Bi-district title

LANCASTER–The Kemp Yellowjackets took home the Bi-district championship after defeating the Keene Chargers to start postseason play Feb. 18 at Lancaster High School.
Darel Booker opened the scoring in the first quarter for the ’Jackets off a steal and a layup to put Kemp up 2-0.
Boomer Irvin added another layup for Kemp while Cameron Clamon added back-to-back shots as the ’Jackets pushed their early lead to 8-0, forcing a Keene timeout with 4:22 left in the first quarter.
The Chargers finally got on the board with 3:47 remaining in the quarter as they finished on a 7-2 run as Kemp took a 10-7 lead into the second quarter.
Each team picked up an offensive foul to start the second quarter, with the Chargers following with a quick basket afterwards to trim the deficit to 10-9.
Irvin hit two free throws from the line and added an offensive rebound to push the lead for the ’Jackets to 14-9.
Kemp’s offense then went to work on the Charger defense as Clamon added two free throws and Irvin added another steal and layup to make it 22-13.
Jaise Bowie knocked down a three-pointer, followed by another three-pointer from Irvin to make it 32-15 in favor of Kemp.
Bowie sent the Kemp faithful over the top with a three-pointer at the buzzer as the ’Jackets took a big 38-17 lead into halftime.
Irvin opened the scoring for both teams as he picked up the first points with 6:24 left in the third quarter as Keene took an early timeout to figure out a game plan to start their comeback.
The Chargers then went on a 12-0 run as their defense pressed Kemp downcourt and forced multiple turnovers to cut the deficit to 42-29, forcing a Kemp timeout with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter.
Bowie then added two straight layups for the ’Jackets with Irvin adding a late three-pointer as Kemp took a 49-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Irvin opened the final quarter with a three-point shot to push the ’Jackets ahead 52-35.
Irvin then picked up a block, steal and an assist as he pitched the ball to Booker for a layup, forcing a Keene timeout with 3:07 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Booker added a free throw before Taylor Donovan picked up his first points of the night on an offensive rebound to push Kemp past the 60-point mark as they took a 60-39 lead.
Ethyn Irvin added a late jump shot as the ’Jackets sealed the deal, 64-45, to take home the Bi-district championship over the Chargers.
The ’Jackets were led by Irvin, who notched 23 points over the Chargers Monday night.
Clamon was right behind with 17 points while Bowie added 11 points in Kemp’s Bi-district win.
Booker added nine points with Donovan and Irvin rounding out the scoring for the ’Jackets with two points apiece.
