Lady ’Cats top Lady Eagles, move to 5-2
KERENS–The Kerens Lady ’Cats chalked up a Tuesday, Dec. 3 victory over a longtime foe, the Mildred Lady Eagles, outpacing their Navarro County neighbors with a 62-50 non-district win.
Kerens moves to 5-2 on the season, with other victories over Palestine Westwood, Buffalo, Rice and Blooming Grove. The only Lady ’Cat losses are in overtime to Normangee (66-64) and a 54-42 defeat at Malakoff.
Against Mildred, Kerens led by 10 points late in the first quarter before the Lady Eagles hit a midcourt three-pointer at the buzzer to get within 17-10. Reece Wright scored a basket to give Kerens a 28-15 second-period lead, which Mildred cut to 32-22 at halftime.
In the second half, Mildred continued getting closer at 32-24, after which Kecie Langley of Kerens took control, scoring 10 of her team-leading 32 points, including a three-pointer. Langley helped Kerens seize a 46-30 advantage entering the final quarter.
Another Langley bucket with 5:48 remaining in the game gave Kerens its largest lead of the night, at 53-34. Wright hit five free throws in the fourth quarter to continue keeping Mildred at bay, including two from the stripe with 15 seconds left in the contest. Mildred scored a basket at the buzzer to account for the 62-50 final score.
After Langley’s 32 points, other Kerens scorers included Wright with 16 points, Alexius McAdams and Kaylee Reed with five points apiece, and Emilee Burleson with four points.
