Playoff-bound boys end regular season, beat Cross Roads
CROSS ROADS, PALESTINE–The Kerens Lady ‘Cats clinched a Bi-district championship Tuesday, Feb. 18 with a 55-24 win over Leon High School, which was played in Palestine.
That same night, Kerens’ boys defeated Cross Roads, 68-48, to close the regular season and enter the playoffs as the fourth-place team from District 19-2A. Kerens’ girls advanced this weekend to the Area round to play Rosebud-Lott, which beat Axtell, 39-33, in their playoff opener. Kerens’ boys are expected to play Grapeland Feb. 24 or 25 for their first playoff game.
The boys’ win at Cross Roads followed their Feb. 14 home victory over Frost, at which seniors Corey Davis, Desmond Lindsey and Ladarian Cumby were recognized before their final home game. Davis went on to score 29 points, leading Kerens to a 78-50 win.
Cross Roads also recognized several seniors before their Feb. 18 season finale against Kerens. Tucker Watson, Trent Watson, Brandon Bell, Carson McCurley, John Castillo, Eli Wilson and Caleb Blain were noted for their career contributions during pregame ceremonies.
Cross Roads kept the Kerens game close through halftime, trailing 33-31. In the third period, Kerens took control, outscoring Cross Roads, 23-6. Kerens built upon its 56-37 lead in the fourth period to take home a 68-48 victory. Kerens was led by Davis, who scored 27 points, as well as Cumby, who had 23 points.
For Cross Roads, Tucker Watson scored 11 points, Trent Watson tallied eight points and McCurley added seven points.
