Kerens’ girls win Kiwanis, boys take third

Lady Bobcats take first at Kiwanis tournament

KERENS–The Kerens Lady ‘Cats won the annual Kiwanis Classic basketball tournament Saturday, Dec. 28 at Navarro College in Corsicana, beating Teague, 53-33.
Kecie Langley, who scored 33 points in the championship game, was named tournament Most Valuable Player. Alexius McAdams and Reece Wright also made the All-Tournament team.
The Lady ‘Cats opened the Kiwanis tournament with a 47-27 victory over Rice, then defeated Mildred, 39-20, to advance to the championship game.
The Kerens boys won third place at the Kiwanis Classic, falling in overtime to eventual champion Rice in the semifinals, 67-63. Against Rice, Kerens was led by Josh Brown with 14 points. The Bobcats opened the tournament with a 49-48 win over Mildred and beat the Corsicana JV team, 45-42, to secure third place.
Following the Kiwanis Classic, the Kerens boys secured their next victory Jan. 3 by beating North Zulch, 43-28. Against North Zulch, RJ Mornes led Kerens with 12 points, followed by Cory Davis, who scored 10 points.
Friday, Dec. 10, the Kerens girls were set to host while the boys had a scheduled game at Douglass.
The Kerens teams start District 19-2A play later this month, with the girls going to Cross Roads Tuesday, Jan. 14 and the boys traveling to Cayuga, Friday, Jan. 17.
