After Area win, Sandiettes stop Kerens in Regional Quarters
FRANKSTON–Kerens’ boys’ and girls’ basketball teams saw their seasons end Tuesday, Feb. 25, as both squads lost games against the Grapeland Sandies and Sandiettes in a playoff doubleheader at Frankston High School.
The Kerens Lady ‘Cats finished the 2019-20 season with a 28-9 record. Friday, Feb. 21, the Lady ‘Cats defeated Rosebud-Lott, 60-40, to win the Area championship at Fairfield. Kerens led 26-4 after the first period and 51-26 after three periods. Reece Wright led the Lady ‘Cats with 27 points.
The Area championship allowed Kerens to move on to the Class 2A, Region 3 Quarterfinals against Grapeland, which entered the game ranked in the state’s top 5 with a 31-5 record. Grapeland led 20-17 after the first period, after which Kerens took control for a 36-34 halftime lead. Kecie Langley had 23 Kerens points at halftime.
The Lady ‘Cats continued to lead after three periods, holding a 50-48 advantage. After that, Grapeland went on a 24-12 fourth-period tear to win 72-62. Langley of Kerens finished the night with 40 points.
After the girls’ game, Kerens’ boys took the same court to open the playoffs in the Bi-district round against 31-1 Grapeland, which also is ranked in the state’s top 5. The score was tied at 21 after the first period, after which Grapeland outscored the Kerens Bobcats, 26-14, to take a 47-35 halftime lead.
Grapeland entered the fourth period with a 59-49 lead and outscored the Bobcats, 28-22, in the final period to win the Bi-district title with an 87-71 victory. Corey Davis led Kerens with 24 points, followed by Jaylene Cumby with 17 points and Ladarian Cumby with 16 points.
