DAWSON–The Kerens Bobcats scored two touchdowns before halftime to put away the Dawson Bulldogs Oct. 2 in their District 8-2A, Division 1 opener.
Kerens improved their season record to 2-4 and hosts the 4-1 Italy Gladiators Friday, Oct. 9 in the latter team’s district opener, following a postponement of Italy’s originally scheduled opener against Marlin.
Kerens quarterback Damarya Baxter ran for a 7-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left in the first half to give Kerens its 21-13 advantage. Baxter had earlier found Jaylon Harris with a 66-yard touchdown pass with just over 5 minutes left in the second quarter, which gave Kerens its first lead, at 14-13, after Adrian Solis’ successful extra-point kick.
Kerens’ go-ahead touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery by Bobcat defender Alex Fuller, one of several key turnovers forced by the Kerens defense, including a Baxter second-half interception, an Izick Smith fumble recovery midway through the fourth quarter and a fourth-down pass breakup with 1:51 left in the game.
Dawson, which scored on its first possession of the game, had gone back ahead 13-7 early in the second quarter (Kerens blocked the extra point), breaking a 7-7 tie which came courtesy of a Jacorey Agnew fumble recovery for Kerens inside Dawson’s 15-yard line, which he returned for a touchdown.
On the previous Dawson drive, Kerens’ Jaylene Cumby returned a Bulldog fumble to the Dawson 6-yard line, but the Dawson defense stopped Kerens on downs at their own 2-yard line, preserving their 7-0 lead until Agnew’s game-tying touchdown.
