KERENS–Kerens’ softball team overpowered Fruitvale, 10-6, to pick up their first district win of the season in their March 10, 20-2A home opener at Bob Lancaster Park.
Kenadee Lynch, pitching for Kerens, retired Fruitvale in order in the top of the first inning. Lynch then led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to left field and advanced to third base on a Fruitvale passed ball. Kaylee Reed, who has signed a scholarship to play softball at Navarro College, next hit an inside-the-park home run down the left-field line to score Kerens’ first two runs of the contest.
Fruitvale answered by scoring two runs with two outs in the top of the second inning to tie the game. Kerens left fielder McKenzie Bancroft doubled up a Fruitvale runner at first base after a running catch to end another Fruitvale threat in the top of the third inning.
Kerens’ offense kept plugging away at the Fruitvale pitcher to secure their 10-6 win, with the latter innings featuring sophomore Leah Greene’s first career home run. Kerens, which played Fruitvale during spring break, is scheduled to continue district play at LaPoynor (weather permitting) Friday, March 13 and Tuesday, March 17 at Trinidad. The Kerens girls are scheduled to return home Friday, March 20 to face district foe Cayuga.
