KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats jumped out to an early lead over Cross Roads Jan. 28 and never looked back, winning the District 19-2A contest, 63-36, for Kerens’ first league win of the season. The Cross Roads boys fell to 0-5 in district play.
Muziq Gunnell, who led Kerens with 24 points, hit a three-pointer with 4:58 left in the first period to give Kerens a 12-2 advantage. Zachary Blain scored to get Cross Roads back within 15-8, but Kerens went on a 13-point run that included a Gunnell three-pointer, a bucket by Bryce Lincoln and a Gunnell steal and basket that increased the Kerens lead to 28-8, prompting a Cross Roads timeout.
Kerens continued to pour it on in the second period, with a Lane Lynch three-pointer putting Kerens up 35-12. After leading 36-15 at halftime, Kerens saw a Cross Roads run led by Bub Latham, who scored six of his 11 points during the third period.
However, two Lincoln baskets and another Lynch three-pointer put Kerens up 50-26 entering the fourth period. Nehemiah Massey sank one free throw with four minutes left in the game to give Kerens its largest lead of the night, at 59-30.
Blain led Cross Roads with 12 points, followed by Latham’s 11, six points from Riley Brown, Austin Harris with five points and Aaron Clopton with two points. Besides Gunnell, other Kerens leading scorers were Lynch with 12 points, Lincoln and AJ Stevens with 10 points apiece, Antonio McAdams and Hunter Crawford with three points each and Massey with one point.
