KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats are still seeking their first district win of the season following a Jan. 19, 63-48 loss to the LaPoynor Flyers, who are ranked No. 5 in the state for Class 2A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
LaPoynor scored the game’s first eight points before Kerens’ Jaylene Cumby hit a three-pointer with 4:30 left in the first period. Tyler Carter drained two free throws, and then Treylyn Lindsey scored a bucket, all of which got Kerens within 12-7. However, LaPoynor answered by scoring the last 10 points of the first period, taking a 22-7 lead.
Josh Brown and Kam Hall scored two consecutive baskets that got Kerens within nine points during the second period, but the Flyers outscored Kerens, 4-2, for the rest of the period (including the last bucket of the first half), seizing a 30-17 halftime lead.
LaPoynor started pulling away in the third period, building a 37-21 lead halfway through the third period, which caused Kerens to call timeout, before taking a 20-point lead into the fourth period, at 46-26.
Despite two Lindsey baskets and two Cumby three-pointers, Kerens continued to fall behind in the final period, with LaPoynor leading 61-39. Buckets by RJ Mornes and Cumby, along with a three-point play by Carter, chipped away at the LaPoynor lead late in the game, but it wasn’t enough as the Flyers won by 15 points.
Cumby led Kerens with 14 points, followed by Lindsey with 12 points, Carter contributing nine points and Brown adding seven points. Mornes, Hall and Jacory Agnew rounded out the Kerens scoring with two points apiece.
