Bobcats go 3-0 at Trojan varsity tourney
KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats blew through their competition at the annual Trinidad basketball tournament, beating every opponent they faced at the Dec. 5-7 affair, including a 20-point victory over Class 3A Kemp.
Along with the 57-37 win against Kemp at the Trinidad tournament, Kerens also defeated the host Trojans, 51-39, and overcame Oakwood, 45-33. Versus Kemp, All-Tournament team member Cory Davis led Kerens with 13 points, followed by Adaybran Davis and Ladarian Cumby, who each had 10 points. Cory Davis also led Kerens with 13 points against Oakwood, while Jaylene Cumby led the Bobcats with 11 points against Trinidad.
After the Trinidad tournament, Kerens returned home Tuesday, Dec. 10 to host Dallas Gateway Charter Academy. The Bobcats led 28-23 at halftime, which Dallas Gateway cut to 37-33 at the end of the third period. A Cory Davis 3-pointer with 4:50 remaining in the fourth period gave Kerens a 42-37 lead, which Dallas Gateway soon chopped to 42-40 on three free throws, and then tied at 42 with 3:15 left in the game.
Following a Kerens timeout, Dallas Gateway took control of the game, leading by as many as six points. A Treylyn Lindsey free throw with 51 seconds left got Kerens back within 48-45, but Dallas Gateway made three free throws down the stretch to seize a 51-45 win.
Against Dallas Gateway, Cory Davis was the Bobcats’ leading scorer with 13 points, followed by Josh Brown, who had 12 points. Treylyn Lindsey added eight points for the Kerens’ cause.
