KERENS–“The Jewell of Kerens,” Jewell Hutson, turned 109-years-old Jan. 27. The Sunday before her birthday Jan. 26, friends and family gathered at First United Methodist Church to wish her well.
Hutson’s monumental birthday made the news in Dallas, with a shout-out on KDFW, Ch. 4 and a feature story on WFAA, Ch. 8, for which she was interviewed in Kerens by reporter Sean Giggy. “It was wonderful,” she said. “I fell in love with that little guy.”
Hutson, who says she faithfully reads The Monitor, was born in 1911 at Elm Flat, a community southwest of Kerens. After graduating from Kerens High School in 1929, she went to college in Denton and became a teacher for nearly half a century, working in Kerens, Powell and Malakoff, among other stops. She retired from Kerens Elementary School in 1979.
