Bobcats outscore Mildred in second half
KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats remained winless on the 2019 season following a 39-20 loss to the Mildred Eagles, unable to come back from a 33-0 second-half deficit during the Friday, Sept. 13 contest.
Kerens returned to action Friday, Sept. 20 with a home game against Groveton, the result of which will be reported in the Sunday, Sept. 29 edition of The Monitor.
Immediately after Mildred took a 33-0 lead with a 66-yard touchdown run early in the second half, Josh Brown of Kerens sparked the Bobcats with a 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 7:07 left in the third quarter. The 2-point conversion pass fell incomplete, making the score 33-6, Mildred.
Mildred took advantage of a short field after the Kerens kickoff and scored their last touchdown of the night on a 1-yard quarterback keeper to go ahead 39-6 with 2:22 left in the third quarter. Brown blocked the Mildred extra point.
Daniel Fernandez ran for a 4-yard Kerens touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, with freshman quarterback Rex Bonner running for a 2-point conversion that got the Bobcats within 39-14 with 11:45 left in the game.
After forcing a Mildred punt, Kerens scored again when Bonner found Ben Brooks for a 77-yard touchdown pass with 6:33 remaining in the contest. The 2-point conversion run was unsuccessful. Mildred converted on fourth-and-5 to keep alive its next possession, allowing the Eagles to kneel out the clock on the 39-20 victory.
