Bobcats visit Rio Vista before beginning district play
KERENS–The Groveton Indians galloped to a big Sept. 20 halftime lead to overpower the Kerens Bobcats, 41-14, which dropped the Bobcats to 0-4 in 2019.
Kerens returned to action against the Rio Vista Eagles, traveling south of Fort Worth to Johnson County for a Sept. 27 contest. The Eagles were 1-3 entering the Kerens game, with their lone victory coming Sept. 13 against Rosebud-Lott by the score of 24-6.
After an Oct. 4 open date, the Bobcats begin their District 9-2A schedule with the Oct. 11 homecoming game against Cross Roads.
Groveton scored all of its points in the first half, which led both teams to agree to run a continuous clock in the second half. Kerens got on the scoreboard late in the game, when Josh Brown ran 54 yards for a touchdown with 5:24 remaining. Freshman quarterback Rex Bonner found Jason Burleson for the 2-point conversion pass to put the game at 41-8.
Daniel Fernandez of Kerens recovered a Groveton fumble at the 2:30 mark of the fourth quarter, returning the ball to the Indian 21-yard line. Bonner eventually found Brown for a 9-yard touchdown pass with 53.6 seconds left in the contest, but the ensuing 2-point conversion pass fell incomplete, leaving the final score at 41-14, Groveton.
