Kerens girls end year with tiebreaker loss to Cayuga

CROSS ROADS–The Kerens Lady ‘Cats faced Cayuga Feb. 8 to decide the final girls’ basketball team to advance to the playoffs from District 19-2A, after both teams finished the regular season tied for fourth place.
Kerens, which split its two earlier district contests with Cayuga, saw its season end with a 51-31 loss at neutral-site Cross Roads.
In Kerens’ regular-season finale, played Feb. 5 at home against the LaPoynor Lady Flyers, Kerens overcame an early 11-2 deficit on Senior Night to twice get within one point in the first half, behind a Kenadee Lynch three-pointer and an Alexius McAdams three-point play. LaPoynor regrouped to lead 32-26 at halftime.
A Reece Wright steal and bucket early in the second half cut the LaPoynor lead to 32-28. After that, a Leah Greene basket kept Kerens close, at 36-30. But soon, the Lady Flyers pulled away.
With two minutes left in the third period, LaPoynor hit a three-pointer to take a 13-point lead. LaPoynor built a 48-33 advantage entering the fourth period, which Kerens reduced to 49-37 on an Olivia Holt basket.
The Lady Flyers outscored Kerens 18-4 the rest of the game, winning 67-41. Kerens’ final basket came on a layup by Wright, who led the Lady ‘Cats with 14 points. McAdams added eight Kerens points, followed by seven from Tiara Bailey.
