Kerens girls fall to Cayuga in district opener

KERENS–The Kerens Lady ‘Cats stayed within two points of the Cayuga Lady Wildcats through three periods before Cayuga outscored Kerens 12-3 the rest of the way and took home a 41-30 win in both teams’ District 19-2A opener Jan. 7.
A Tiani Hall layup late in the first period got Kerens within 8-7 of Cayuga, but the Lady Wildcats scored two buckets to enter the second period with a 12-7 lead. Cayuga led by 11 points two different times before entering the half with a 22-13 lead.
With Cayuga leading by 12 points, Hall stole the ball at midcourt then converted a three-point play to get Kerens within 27-18. Another Hall bucket cut the Cayuga lead to 27-20, prompting a Lady Wildcat timeout halfway through the third period.
Hall hit a three-pointer with 27 seconds left in the third period, then Gracelynn Foreman sank two free throws with 11.5 seconds left before the fourth period, both of which whittled Cayuga’s advantage to 29-27.
After Kerens’ 14-point third-period outburst, one Cayuga hoop and a series of Lady Wildcat free throws extended Cayuga’s lead to 41-27. A Blair Blue free throw and Leah Greene bucket closed out Kerens’ scoring for the 41-30 final.
Hall led Kerens with 12 points, followed by Greene with six points, Foreman and TeNiyah Washington with four points each, Tiara Bailey with three points and Blue with one point.
