Kerens holds off late Cross Roads charge in win

KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats picked up their first district win of the season by beating Cross Roads Jan. 26, surviving a 14-4 fourth period Cross Roads run to win 52-43.
Cross Roads, also looking for its first District 19-2A win of the year, trailed 46-29 early in the fourth period. Three-pointers from Austin Harris and Haydon Cook helped cut the lead to 48-39, and then later, two consecutive Harris baskets had Cross Roads within 50-43 with 1:42 left in the game.
Two Kerens free throws, from Josh Brown and Tyler Carter, iced the game down the stretch. Jaylene Cumby led Kerens with 23 points, of which 17 were scored in the first half. Tyler Carter and Treylyn Lindsey each scored eight points for Kerens.
Tryce Betts and Harris led Cross Roads with 16 points apiece, both hitting three 3-pointers. Cross Roads had fallen behind 14-7 after the first period, then Cumby of Kerens stretched his team’s lead to 23-12 with less than two minutes before halftime. Betts hit two consecutive three-pointers to get Cross Roads back within 23-18, which Kerens answered with four points to extend its halftime lead to 27-18.
Lindsey and Cumby recorded three-point plays late in the third period, giving Kerens 14 and 15-point leads. Cross Roads was called for an intentional foul late in the third period, but Kerens was only able to convert one free throw. Solomon Brown of Cross Roads scored a bucket before the end of the third period, getting his team within 44-29.
