Kerens HS softball stays unbeaten in district play

KERENS–Under spring-like skies at Kerens High School March 8, the varsity baseball and softball teams each ushered in their district home schedule by beating their visitors from LaPoynor.
At Bob Lancaster Park, the Lady ’Cat softball squad took a 12-0 win that also was truncated at five innings. Across campus at the Bobcat baseball diamond, Kerens opened district with an 11-1, five-inning victory over LaPoynor, then Tuesday, March 12 beat Trinidad, 18-8, to improve to 2-0 in district.
The Lady ‘Cat softball team is now 3-0 in district play after picking up a Friday, March 1 forfeited victory against Neches and by steamrolling Fruitvale, 21-0, Tuesday, March 5. Class 2A Kerens also took home a non-district win over Class 3A Kemp, winning 24-4.
Further, the Lady ’Cats won third place at the Union Grove softball tournament, which was held Thursday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 2 at the Upshur County school. There, Kerens beat the host team, Union Grove, 7-4, and whipped Daingerfield, 23-0.
The Kerens softball team also beat Linden-Kildare twice at the Union Grove tournament, 5-0 in pool play and 11-0 in the third-place game. Senior pitcher Triniti Hataway threw no-hitters against Daingerfield and during the third-place game against Linden-Kildare.
As for the Kerens baseball team against LaPoynor, the Bobcats allowed one run in the third inning while posting 11 of their own. Kerens scored in each inning: two runs in the first frame, four runs in the bottom of the second, a single run in the third and two runs in each half of the fourth and fifth innings.
Tate Engel led Kerens at the plate with three hits – a single, double and triple – while driving in three runs. Addison Carter also had three hits, including a double and two runs batted in. Anders Sundquist drove in two runs with a single, and Dusty Spence and Corey Davis each drove in a run with singles.
Against LaPoynor, Spence threw a complete game, striking out three Flyers and allowing one earned run.
Versus the Trinidad Trojans March 12, the Bobcat baseball team again put runs on the board in every inning: one in the first, third and fourth innings, along with six, five and four runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Kerens won 18-8 in six innings.
Engel, TK Davis and Ino Garcia each hit triples during the Trinidad game, with Sundquist adding a double. Sundquist led Kerens with three runs batted in (RBI), followed by Brady Blue, Garcia and Spence with two RBI apiece. Engel, Carter, Davis and Payden Duggins drove in one run each.
Cody Crawford, Sundquist, Spence and Chris Jones saw time on the mound for the Bobcats, combining to strike out five Trojans.
The Kerens diamond squads are scheduled to travel to Cayuga Friday, March 15 and to host Martin’s Mill Tuesday, March 19.
