KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats took an Oct. 18 licking from the Leon Cougars, falling 62-24, which dropped Kerens’ district record to 1-1.
Kerens traveled to Cayuga High School for an Oct. 25 contest against the rival Wildcats, who entered the game at 2-5 overall. The Cayuga record includes a total of two losses in District 9-2A, Division 1, at the hands of Centerville and Normangee.
Kerens struck first when Adaybran Davis ran 11 yards for a touchdown with 5:56 left in the first quarter, but the Bobcats missed the extra point. Leon answered with a 73-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and went ahead 7-6 following the point-after kick.
Leon scored a second touchdown toward the end of the first quarter to take a 14-6 lead. Early in the second quarter, Kerens quarterback Corey Davis found Adaybran Davis for a 37-yard touchdown pass, but the two-point conversion didn’t succeed, keeping Kerens at a 14-12 disadvantage.
A barrage of Leon touchdowns gave the Cougars command of the game at 42-12 halfway through the third quarter. Kerens responded with a Daniel Fernandez 2-yard touchdown run, which Leon answered again with a touchdown. Both teams failed to convert extra-point tries, leaving Leon with a 48-18 lead.
Josh Brown scored a 17-yard touchdown run with 8:29 left in the game, which brought Kerens within 48-24 after the 2-point conversion pass fell incomplete. Leon cushioned its lead with two more late-game touchdowns to cement a 62-24 victory.
