Lady Bobcats top Malakoff in season opener
KERENS–Volleyball season started Aug. 11 for Kerens, when the Lady ‘Cats hosted one of their rivals from across the Trinity River – Malakoff – beating the visiting Lady Tigers in four sets.
Malakoff, also playing its first match of 2020, took a 10-9 first-set lead when Camryn Gaddis blocked the ball over the net for a point. Alexius McAdams of Kerens led her team roaring back for a 17-11 lead, a margin which Malakoff eventually cut to 22-21 before Kerens retook control to win the first set, 25-21.
Behind McAdams, Reece Wright and Elaysia Morgan, Kerens went ahead 14-5 in the second set when Malakoff mounted another comeback, outscoring Kerens 12-7. Kelsea Boles of Malakoff racked up a kill and a point on her following serve to get Malakoff within 21-17, prompting a Kerens timeout.
A McAdams kill after the break in action got things going again for the Lady ‘Cats, who scored the final four points of the second set, culminating with a Malakoff return of a Kerens serve that fell out of bounds to give the Lady ‘Cats a second-set win, at 25-17.
Malakoff’s Kayte Walker blocked over a point and Addison Wittram served up two points that gave Malakoff a 5-1 third-set lead. The Lady Tigers extended their lead to 12-4, when Kerens called a timeout, after which Kerens came within 14-10, which led to Malakoff stopping play for a timeout. Momentum stayed with Malakoff through the rest of the third set, which the Lady Tigers won, 25-15.
After Malakoff cut Kerens’ fourth-set lead to 14-12, the Lady ‘Cats, behind Morgan and McAdams (the latter of whom had 17 kills) outscored the Lady Tigers 11-7 to secure the fourth and final set at 25-19.
