Kerens preps for Corsicana Kiwanis Classic

KERENS–Kerens High School basketball competed at tournaments in Eustace and Brownsboro, played single games Dec. 17 and 20, and then started preparing for the annual Kiwanis Classic tournament, scheduled Dec. 26-28 at Navarro College in Corsicana.
Dec. 17, the Class 2A Lady ‘Cats defeated their host, Class 4A Palestine, winning 47-40. The Lady ‘Cat victory avenged a Dec. 7, 57-43 loss to Palestine. That night, back in Kerens, the Bobcat boys fell to Blooming Grove, 70-54. Dec. 20, the Kerens boys played at Buffalo while the Kerens girls took the night off.
Earlier this month, the Lady ‘Cats took part in the 33rd-annual Great East Texas Shootout in Brownsboro, winning their last three games to finish 3-2. Over the course of Dec. 12-13, the Kerens girls beat Grand Saline (48-30) and Rusk (61-60), and then defeated Grace Community of Tyler, 54-36.
At the Eustace tournament, the Bobcat boys played Ferris and Edgewood before defeating Dallas A+ Academy, 68-43, to win the championship of the bronze bracket. The bronze championship game was played Saturday, Dec. 14.
Dec. 17 against Blooming Grove, the Bobcats tied the game late in the first period at 14 after two consecutive Cory Davis baskets, the latter following a steal. After a timeout, Blooming Grove began to take control of the game, seizing a 40-24 halftime lead.
Blooming Grove nailed a barrage of 3-pointers in the second half to cruise to victory, leading 56-37 after the third period. Jaylene Cumby drilled a 3-pointer for Kerens early in the fourth period to get the Bobcats within 56-40, but three more Blooming Grove three-pointers the rest of the game helped hand Kerens a 25-point loss, at 70-45.
