KERENS–The Kerens Lady Bobcats softball team started its season with a big win over nearby Rice before taking on larger-enrollment teams in tournament action at Dallas, where they finished in third place.
To open the season against Rice Feb. 15, Kerens won 11-1. A seven-run fourth inning blew open the game for Kerens after the Lady Bobcats led 4-1. Kenadee Lynch hit two triples while driving in two runs and Rylee Spivey struck out 13 Rice batters and allowed one hit while pitching the complete game.
Next, Kerens took part in the Dallas ISD Invitational Tournament, where the Lady Bobcats went 3-3 and took third place. Kerens first faced Dallas Bryan Adams Feb. 17, shutting out the Class 5A team, 22-0, with all Lady Bobcat runs scored in the first inning. Lynch (who also pitched) drove in four runs, including knocking over a home run. McKenzie Bancroft tapped a triple and drove in three runs. Abbigail Holt also drove in three runs.
Kerens fell in their next two games Feb. 18 against Fort Worth Paschal and Wills Point (by just 2-1) but bounced back that evening to shut out Dallas Skyline, 11-0. Against Skyline, Kerens scored runs in every half-inning and were led at the plate by Olivia Holt, who drove in three runs on a single, triple and home run. Raygan Brooks also hit a home run against Skyline and drove in two runs. Leah Greene also had two RBIs.
The Lady Bobcats continued to rack up wins Feb. 19 by beating Richardson Berkner, a Class 6A team, 10-0. Against Berkner, Kerens scored two runs in the first inning, five runs in the second and three runs in the fourth. Bancroft, Spivey and Greene all hit doubles, with Spivey leading the team with two RBIs. Bancroft had two hits in three at-bats. Spivey struck out 12 batters in the five-inning game. Kerens also fell to Sunnyvale that day.
