EMORY–Kerens High School’s softball team overcame an April 30 game-one double-digit defeat to strike back and turn the tables on Big Sandy in a doubleheader sweep May 1 to win the Bi-district championship in a best two-of-three series.
Kerens advances to play Como-Pickton (located near Sulphur Springs) in the Class 2A playoffs Friday, May 7 at 8 p.m. in a one-game, winner-take-all Area championship game at Whitehouse High School near Tyler.
Friday night (April 30), Big Sandy scored three runs in the first inning, one run in the third, six more in the fourth and added two more in the fifth. That offensive outburst outpaced Kerens, which put up single runs in the third and fifth innings. Big Sandy won 12-2 despite only having four hits.
Kerens came back Saturday, May 1 and started off strong, with four and five runs in each of the first two innings, adding five more in the later innings to run-rule Big Sandy, 14-3. Emma Combs led Kerens at the plate with two doubles, driving in two runs. McKenzie Bancroft, Leah Greene and Abbigail Holt also drove in two runs apiece.
During the deciding game three, Kerens scored two runs in the first and fourth innings and added four more in both the third and sixth. Greene drove in four runs and Holt drove in three in the 12-2 win. Kenadee Lynch, who pitched game one with Ella Engel, threw two complete games during the doubleheader. Lynch also scored four runs in the deciding game.
