Next: Best-of-three area series against Rivercrest
PALESTINE–After losing the first game of their best-of-three series, the Kerens Lady ’Cats softball team stormed back to defeat Overton in two straight contests to clinch the school’s second bi-district title in its history, and avenge last year’s loss to the same team.
Kerens next face the Rivercrest Lady Rebels of Bogata, located in Northeast Texas, in the area round. That best-of-three series is scheduled (weather permitting) Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (May 1-3) at Longview High School. This week’s edition of The Tribune was composed Wednesday for printing.
The first game in the Overton series, played at Palestine Westwood High School, took place Thursday, April 25. Kerens lost that game 12-1. The next night (Friday, April 26), the Lady ’Cats bounced back to defeat Overton, 6-4.
In the third and deciding game, Kerens built a 4-1 lead, highlighted by a Kaylee Reed solo home run. Overton scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Kerens lead to 4-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, Triniti Hataway singled and then Leah Greene doubled, setting up Abbigail Holt’s two-run double that extended the Kerens lead to 6-2.
Kerens continued scoring in the top of the sixth inning, when Reed doubled and took third base on an Overton wild pitch. A fielder’s choice off the bat of Myliah Lincoln brought home Reed, making the score 7-2, Kerens. Overton answered with one run in the bottom of the sixth to get within 7-3.
In the top of the seventh inning, Holt drove in Hataway for the eighth Kerens run of the night. Overton got a single run in the last half of the seventh before Hataway grabbed a grounder off the mound and threw out an Overton runner at first to end the game at 8-4, Kerens.
