KERENS–The Class 2A Kerens Lady ‘Cats volleyball team overpowered the Class 3A Kemp Lady Yellowjackets in a 3-0 straight-set win Sept. 3. Following the match, Kerens moved to 8-14 on the season while Kemp dropped to 2-9.
Olivia Holt gave Kerens a 6-2 first-set lead with three consecutive aces. A Kemp point on a block stopped the bleeding before Kerens continued with an Elaysia Morgan ace and McKenzie Bancroft kill to increase the Lady ‘Cat lead to 10-3.
After calling timeout, Kemp crept back and outscored Kerens 6-2, starting with a block point and kill from Ziraya Harper, which cut the Kerens lead to 12-6. Kemp continued with a Gracie Wright ace and two more Harper blocks that got Kemp within 12-9, prompting a Kerens timeout. Kerens then outscored Kemp 13-2, including three Abbigail Holt aces that helped the Lady ‘Cats take the first set, 25-11.
Olivia Holt continued to lead Kerens during the second set, starting with a block point and an ace that gave her team a 5-1 lead. Kemp cut the lead to 8-4 and later got within 11-9 on a Harper point. Kills from Bancroft and Morgan powered Kerens to a second-set win, the latter of which put the score at 25-16.
Kerens roared out to an 8-0 third-set advantage behind two Kenadee Lynch aces. A Liberti Tally block point got Kemp on the board at 8-1, followed by an Aolanis Rivera kill for Kemp that made the score 9-2, Kerens. Bancroft racked up two kills to put Kerens ahead 13-4, a lead which Kerens extended to 15-5.
A Kemp point from Gracie Wright and a Rivera ace got the Lady Yellowjackets closer at 15-7, but Kerens outscored Kemp 10-6 the rest of the way, finishing off the third set and match with a Morgan kill that made the score 25-13, Kerens.
