KERENS–The Kerens Lady ‘Cats volleyball team beat district foe Neches in straight sets Oct. 15, defeating the three-time defending Class 1A state champion Lady Tigers to move to 7-4 in district play.
Kerens’ Class 2A volleyball district includes 1A teams Neches, Trinidad and Oakwood. District 21-2A is led by Cayuga (unbeaten in district play), followed by Neches. Kerens is in third place.
Kerens roared out to a 10-6 first-set lead, fueled by a series of Neches errors resulting in Lady ‘Cat points. Neches tied the set at 13 but Kenadee Lynch and Abbigail Holt aces, along with an Elaysia Morgan block point, helped give Kerens a 23-17 advantage. A Neches serve into the net allowed Kerens to take the first set, 25-18.
During the second set, Neches took a 7-2 lead before losing their lead and falling 25-23. The teams battled through ties before an Olivia Holt kill gave Kerens an 18-17 lead. Neches went up 21-19 but Kerens tied the set at 22 with a Lynch ace. Morgan was involved in Kerens’ last three points with two blocks and a kill.
Neches took another early lead during the third set, going up 8-5. Kerens tied the set at 9 with Leah Greene serving, Lynch scored a kill to knot the set at 12 and a Morgan kill tied things again at 13. Holt, Lynch and Morgan added more kills to help their team take the third set, 25-18.
