KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats outlasted the Cayuga Wildcats Feb. 9 in two separate fast and furious finishes to win a 59-57 overtime barnburner on Senior Night.
Kerens’ Jaylene Cumby hit the game-winning jump shot as the overtime buzzer sounded. Cayuga had tied the game at the end of regulation with a basket, then with 10 seconds left in overtime, tied things up at 57 on a three-pointer.
Kerens went into halftime leading 29-22 but fell behind Cayuga, 43-40, at the end of the third period, when the Wildcats hit a three-pointer. Cayuga went ahead by as many as five points before Tyler Carter tied the game at 47 with a free throw.
Carter later gave Kerens a 52-50 lead on a three-pointer with 1:42 left in regulation, preceding Cayuga’s last-second shot to send the game into overtime. During those extra four minutes, and with the game tied at 52, Carter scored two consecutive baskets to give his team a 56-52 advantage.
Two Cayuga free throws and one freebie from Kerens’ Josh Brown set the score at 57-54, Kerens, leading to the second set of last-moment heroics from both teams.
Carter led Kerens with 18 points, followed by Cumby with 16. Brown added nine points, and Cody Crawford contributed eight points. Kerens is scheduled to end its season Feb. 12 at Cross Roads.
