MALAKOFF–The Kerens High School volleyball team took cross-river rival Malakoff to four sets Friday, Aug. 9 before falling in their first game on the record books.
The Lady ’Cats also competed in tournament play Saturday, Aug. 10 at Dawson, at which Kerens finished third.  Earlier in pool play at Dawson, the Lady ’Cats faced Frost, Axtell, Evant and Avalon. Once bracket play started, Kerens beat Blooming Grove and fell to Bosqueville. None of those tournament games count toward Kerens’ season record because of match limitations.
Against the Malakoff Lady Tigers, Kerens fell behind in the first set, 19-8, before calling a timeout. The Lady ’Cats rallied to close to 23-13, forcing a Malakoff timeout. When play resumed in the first set, Kerens was unable to handle Malakoff, which outscored Kerens 2-1 to take the first set.
During the second set, Kerens went ahead 5-1, a stretch which included two double-hit violations on Malakoff. The Lady Tigers got within 8-5 following an Alexius McAdams block that resulted in a point. Malakoff tied the second set at nine points apiece and eventually held a 23-19 second-set advantage before Kerens tied the set at 23. The Lady ’Cats went on to win the second set, 25-23.
With the game tied at one set each, Malakoff jumped ahead 5-1 in the third set before Kerens climbed back to tie at six points apiece on a McAdams kill. The third set went back-and-forth until Kerens forced a Malakoff timeout after tying the score at 20. The Lady Tigers went ahead 23-20, which Kerens answered with two points (23-22), but Malakoff finished out the third set with a 25-22 win.
Fueled by consecutive aces by Aniya Lawrence earlier in the fourth set, Kerens held an 18-13 lead but Malakoff scored five points to tie the score at 18 points each. The fourth set continued to be close until Malakoff ended the fourth set, as well as the match, at 25-23 with a kill.
The Kerens volleyball team is next set to compete at the Wills Point tournament, scheduled Thursday, Aug. 15 and Saturday, Aug. 17. The team also is scheduled to face Mildred in an away game to be played Tuesday, Aug. 20. The Lady ’Cats are set to open home play by hosting the Kerens tournament, scheduled Thursday, Aug. 22 and Saturday, Aug. 24.
