Kemp takes down Blooming Grove in fourth quarter comeback
KEMP–The Kemp Lady Yellowjackets picked up their third district win with a comeback victory over the Blooming Grove Lady Lions Jan. 7 at home.
The Lady Lions jumped out to a quick lead as they went up 4-0 to begin the game over the Lady ’Jackets.
Kemp got on the board with their first point coming from the free throw line courtesy of Julianna Warren.
The Lady ’Jackets managed just four more points in the quarter as they trailed the Lady Lions 11-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Taylor Carr began the second quarter with an and-1 for Kemp, cutting the deficit to 11-7.
A 10-1 run by the Lady Lions opened a huge lead for Blooming Grove as they move ahead 21-8.
A Kemp timeout snapped the Lady ’Jackets out of their funk as they ended the first half on a 6-0 run as they trailed 21-14 at halftime.
Chloe Woods hit a three-pointer for Kemp to make it a 21-18 contest in the third quarter. Warren followed that up with an and-1, knocking down the free throw to tie the game 21-21.
Kemp managed just four more points in the third quarter as they trailed 35-25 entering the fourth quarter after the Lady Lions ended the quarter on a 14-4 run.
Tenilee Anthony began the fourth quarter with a layup to make it 31-27. Warren added another layup to make it a three-point game in the last minutes of regulation.
The Lady ’Jackets battled their way back late in the fourth quarter with a layup from Carr putting Kemp in front for the first time in the game.
Kemp would never trail after that as they shut down the Lady Lions in the final minute to take a 36-33 district win over Blooming Grove.
Warren led the way with eight points for the Lady ’Jackets against Blooming Grove.
Anthony and Carr added six points in the win with Woods and Karen Lujan notching five points apiece.
The win moves Kemp to 6-6 overall and 3-1 to start district play.
The Lady ’Jackets return to action Tuesday, Jan. 14 down the road against the Eustace Lady Bulldogs with tipoff scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
