Kemp falls in straight sets in home opener
KEMP–The Kemp Lady Yellowjackets varsity volleyball squad dropped their home opener for the 2019 season against the Cayuga Lady Wildcats Tuesday, Aug. 6.
The Lady ’Jackets fell behind early as the Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 4-2 lead early in the first set of the night. A 4-0 run from Cayuga pushed their lead over Kemp to 8-2.
With the Lady ’Jackets trailing 12-6, first-year Head Coach Brent Achorn called the first timeout of the night for Kemp.
The Lady ’Jackets remained within six late as they trailed 19-13, but Cayuga pulled away late as they moved ahead 22-14 before the final Kemp timeout of the first set.
Cayuga would wrap up the set with a 25-18 win to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five set match.
The Lady Wildcats would jump ahead again in the second set as they built an early 9-3 lead. A 14-6 run would put the set basically out of reach as they Lady ’Jackets fell behind 23-9 before the Lady Wildcats notched the final two points for a 25-9 set victory.
Shelby Fidler opened the third set with an ace for Kemp to give them a 1-0 lead, their first of the night.
Kemp built a narrow 3-2 lead before Cayuga battled back to tie the third set 6-6.
The Lady Wildcats would pick up the next three points as they moved in front of the Lady ’Jackets 9-6.
Another kill from Julianna Warren would make it a 10-7 game in favor of Cayuga.
A 10-4 surge from the Lady Wildcats bumped their lead over the Lady ’Jackets to 20-11 before a late Kemp timeout.
Despite a late kill from Kemp’s Madison Williams, it wasn’t enough as they Lady Wildcats topped the Lady ’Jackets 25-15 for a clean three-set sweep.
The loss drops Kemp to 0-1 to begin the 2019 season.
The Lady ’Jackets return to the court Tuesday, Aug. 13 on the road against Faith Family Academy in Dallas.
