Kerens moves to 3-2 in district play
KERENS–The Kerens Lady ‘Cats are 3-2 as the midpoint of the District 21-2A schedule approaches, with trips to defending State champion Neches and longtime nemesis Cayuga on their plate before starting the slate again.
In district play, the Lady ‘Cats have defeated Oakwood, Trinidad and Latexo. Kerens has lost to Cross Roads, which was the team’s 21-2A opener, as well as to Grapeland, which traveled to Kerens Saturday, Sept. 28 for a morning match.
The Grapeland Sandiettes seized that four-set contest, 3-1. Kerens recovered from a 4-1 first-set deficit to move into a 4-4 tie before Grapeland retook the lead at 9-5. Kerens came back twice to get within striking distance, but each time, Grapeland grew its lead, winning the first set, 25-21.
Kerens won the second set after tying the score at 19 points apiece, fueled by Alexius McAdams’ spikes and blocks. With Reece Wright serving, Kerens finished off Grapeland to notch a 25-20 second-set victory.
After Grapeland won the third set, 25-18, both teams battled back and forth in set No. 4. Strong serving from Kenadee Lynch and a Madison Parks spike was not enough to quell Grapeland. The Lady ‘Cats forced the Sandiettes into extra points, before losing 28-26.
