Eustace falls to 3-7 with loss to Malakoff
EUSTACE–The Eustace Lady Bulldogs dropped their third straight district contest against the Malakoff Lady Tigers Jan. 22 at home.
Sha’Kera Thompson opened the scoring for the Lady Tigers with a layup to put Malakoff ahead 2-0.
Lilly Sorells answered with a basket of her own for the Lady Bulldogs to tie the score 2-2.
The two teams once again traded three-point plays as Kiayla Jackson converted on the and-1 and was immediately answered by Rubi Bailey, who hit a three-pointer to make it a 5-5 game.
The Lady Tigers then went on a 6-0 run, ending with an offensive rebound by Kyiah Hicks that led to a Eustace timeout with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter with Malakoff ahead 11-5.
The two teams traded layups at the end of the quarter by Hicks of Malakoff and Madison Holbert of Eustace with the Lady Tigers leading 21-9 after the first eight minutes.
Alliyah Coleman put in a layup to start the second quarter for the Lady Tigers, which was followed by a layup from Sorells to make it a 23-11 game.
After Malakoff added two more points, Sorells knocked down a corner three-pointer to make it 25-14 early in the second quarter.
Bailey hit her second three-point shot of the game and Holbert added a short two-point jump shot to make it a 27-19 game.
Thompson added two points on an offensive rebound for the Lady Tigers to wrap up the first half with Malakoff leading Eustace 29-19.
Sorells hit a free throw to begin the second half by cutting the deficit for Eustace to nine points.
A steal and a layup by Hicks made it a 31-20 game for Malakoff.
Sorells fed a pass ahead to Bailey, who put in the layup to make it a 33-22 game early in the third quarter.
Coleman knocked down a jump shot to add two more points for the Lady Tigers.
Holbert hit a three-point shot for the Lady Bulldogs to make it a 10-point deficit for Eustace.
Hicks added one final layup for the Lady Tigers in the third quarter as Malakoff took a 41-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
Hicks led Coleman ahead with a pass to make it a 43-27 Lady Tiger lead.
Jackson made an inbound pass steal for the Lady Tigers as Malakoff went ahead 45-27.
Kierra Abrahamson put in an offensive rebound for the Lady Bulldogs to cut the deficit to 49-29.
Bailey added one final free throw for the Lady Bulldogs, but it wasn’t enough as Eustace fell to the Lady Tigers 49-30.
Sorells led the way in scoring for the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points against Malakoff.
Bailey added nine points while Holbert picked up seven points against the Lady Tigers.
The loss drops the Lady Bulldogs to 4-13 overall and 3-7 in district play.
Eustace returns to the court Tuesday, Jan. 29 at home against first-place Blooming Grove (8-1) at 4:30 p.m.
