Athens tops Jacksonville, falls to Grand Saline
ATHENS–The Athens Lady Hornets split their doubleheader against both the Jacksonville Indians and the Grand Saline Indians Aug. 13 at Athens High School.
The Lady Hornets began the night against Jacksonville by falling behind 3-2 in the first set. The Lady Hornets managed to battle back and tie the set 5-5 before a serving error by Jacksonville gave Athens their first lead of the night 6-5.
A 7-3 run from Athens put them ahead 13-8. The Lady Hornets rattled off seven straight points to move up 20-8. The Lady Hornets finished off the set with a 25-14 win over Jacksonville.
Athens showed their dominance in the second set as they opened up an early 5-1 lead.
The Lady Hornets eventually built up a big 20-9 lead as they took control against Jacksonville. The Lady Hornets took down Jacksonville with a 25-13 win to take a 2-0 set lead.
After falling behind 4-1 in the third set, the Lady Hornets battled back to tie the set 6-6. Jacksonville eventually pushed ahead late 16-8 over Athens. They wouldn’t relinquish the lead despite a late rally from Athens as Jacksonville took a 25-21 win.
Athens took charge early in the fourth set as they went ahead 5-1 to begin the set against Jacksonville.
Athens and Jacksonville battled back and forth as Athens led 14-11 late in the fourth set.
The gap remained a 3-point lead for Athens late as they sat in front 20-17. A 5-2 run at the end gave Athens a 25-19 victory as they defeated Jacksonville three sets to one.
Next up for Athens was Grand Saline as they looked for the doubleheader sweep.
The Lady Hornets fell in the first set 25-17 as the two teams began their second game of the night.
Athens managed just 16 points in the second set as they fell 25-16 and dropped down two sets to none.
Despite battling back, Athens dropped their third straight set 25-18.
With the doubleheader split, the Lady Hornets sit at 3-1 overall to begin the 2019 season.
The Lady Hornets hit the road Aug. 15 and 17 to take part in the Eustace varsity tournament.
Athens takes on Elkhart to begin the tournament at 8 a.m., followed by a match with Cayuga at 11 a.m. and Palmer at 12 noon.
After their three games on Thursday morning in tournament play, the Lady Hornets return home to take on the Frankston Indians Aug. 16 at 4:30 p.m.
