Athens rallies against Caddo Mills to advance to Area
ROYSE CITY–The Athens Lady Hornets took down the Caddo Mills Foxes in their three-game playoff series April 25-27 to win the Bi-district championship and advance to the Area round of the playoffs.
After dropping the series opener against the Foxes, the Lady Hornets needed a response on Friday night to keep their postseason hopes alive.
Things didn’t begin well for the Lady Hornets as the Foxes jumped on them early by plating four runs in the top of the first inning as Athens fell behind 4-0.
Cae Cae Sneed got the Lady Hornets on the board in the bottom half of the inning on a passed ball to make it 4-1.
A wild pitch and an error by the Lady Hornets increased Caddo Mills’ lead to 6-1 in the top of the third inning.
The Lady Hornets began their rally in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Abby Garcia to make it 6-2. Brooklynn Cook grounded into a fielder’s choice, followed by a defensive error by the Foxes to make it a two-run game as Athens closed the gap to 6-4. Kenzie Hair drove home Heidi Holyfield with an RBI triple to make it a one-run game.
The Lady Hornets finally tied the game on an error with Jill Calkins reaching first base. Sneed followed with a ringing two-run double to put Athens in front 8-6, where they would stay to tie the series up 1-1.
Game three Saturday night began with three-and-a-half scoreless innings between the Lady Hornets and the Foxes.
The Lady Hornets exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, capped off by a big two-run home run from Cook to put Athens ahead 5-0 after four innings.
After getting on the board to make it a 5-1 game, the Lady Hornets plated another run in the bottom of the fifth inning on Hair’s RBI single.
A ground out to second base by Sneed made it 7-2 late in favor of the Lady Hornets.
Caddo Mills made a late push in the final inning as the Foxes added a two-run home run to trim the Athens’ lead to 7-4, but the Lady Hornets held off Caddo Mills on their way to a Bi-district championship.
Cook picked up the complete game victory for Athens, going seven innings, surrendering four runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Athens moves to 16-16 overall and will take on Bullard in the Area round of the playoffs May 2-4.
Game one takes place May 2 at 8 p.m., game two May 3 at 8 p.m. and game three (if necessary) will take place Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. All games will be played at Rains High School.
